If I waited for DOMS to go away, I would never workout

178.1
15:00 rowing
2 sets lifting

Yesterday's swim (that I failed to blog) helped loosen up the extremely sore quads, but I woke up plenty stiff this morning.  I knew that running or doing legs would not be wise, but I can't let DOMS stand in the way of working out, or I would never get anywhere!

Rowing only hurt my legs a little bit, so it was a good compromise.  I had a good lifting session, although lowering myself onto the bench for the flys and chest presses involved a small bit of cringing.

I sure hope this soreness lets up, because its hard not to run on such pretty days, and tomorrow looks like it will be just as pretty.

Working out when I'm too busy to blog

Jan 24
177.9
14:25, 500 m swim

Had just enough time to squeeze in a quick swim.  Muscles were tired and sluggish today, but swimming and a quick soak in the hot tub made them feel much better.

Jan 25
30:00, elliptical
10:00, rowing
2 sets leg machines

Pushed harder than usual on cardio today.  Wanted to quit after about 25 minutes on the elliptical, but pushed through it. Great workout, worked up a decent sweat.

Jan 26
Up most of the night with sick kids, so exhausted by the time I left work. Just stayed home and cuddled with the kiddos.

Jan 27
31:50, 1.9 mile walk/run with Seth
5:00 rowing
2 sets lifting

Good workout.  Seth and I would walk 2 laps, run 1.  He is getting faster but doesn't have the cardio endurance yet for longer runs.  So proud of him for making this change.

I felt strong on the lifting and I like the changes I am seeing in the mirror.  My tummy is stubbornly hanging on, but I can see the changes in muscle definition in my arms and legs and I know I am getting stronger.

Today
176.4
25:47, 2 mile run

It was 70 degrees today!  Just had time to squeeze in a quick 2 miler at the park before we had to pick up the kindergartner and I had to get to work.  It was weird to run in such warm weather, found myself getting thirsty which normally doesn't happen on such short runs.

Felt good to get out and run without anything holding me back.  I wish I would have had the time to drive down to Thunderbird for a trail run, but with only one working car at the moment, I am restricted by the kid's school schedules.

Oh where is my hairbrush?!

25:34, 2 miles on indoor track
5:00 rowing machine
2 sets lifting

Today's schedule had me co-chairing a meeting in Norman at 1:30, and then working until close at my home library.  Logically I decided that the best use of my time and gas was to take my dress clothes with me, workout at the Norman YMCA, showering there before dashing over to my meeting.

Great plan, except I forgot to pack a hairbrush.  After a great workout and quick shower I discovered that no amount of finger combing was not going to cut it!  Luckily there was gas station on the way and all was not lost.

All those New Year's taking up the machines... grumble grumble grumble

179.2
15:00, odd machine next to the elliptical
15:00 rowing
2 sets leg machines
11:00 steam room

All those darn New Year Resolution people were taking up all the ellipticals (and almost all the other cardio equipment!) so I had to use an almost-elliptical machine.  I ended up accidentally ending the session halfway through so I moved over to the rowing machine instead, since at least I know what I am doing on that one!

It was a good workout nonetheless and I am adequately sore which is how you know you are getting your money's worth out of your gym membership.

Cold, busy and tired.

15:00 rowing
20:00 lifting, 2 sets

It's hard to workout in December.  Socially the calendar is packed, and work life just keeps on rolling along.  The weather and short days make it hard to get in runs (because I am a big sissy about the cold).  This weekend I worked 16 hours and had a big party to attend too.  Since I work almost exactly the hours that the gym is open on the weekends, I did not get in any work outs.

I wore my high heeled boots to work today and by quitting time my feet to knees were telling me they would not cooperate with any running, so upper body it was!  My work out went well and I upped the weights on most of my sets.  I'm about to fall asleep at the keyboard though, life is just too busy this time of year.

p.s. no weigh in this morning because I stayed in bed too long and had to scramble to make it to work on time.  My bed is just too warm and comfy and I am too tired, so this is a common problem these days.

The excuses not used

177.2
15:00 rowing machine
35:00 stationary bicycle

Today I am proud of myself for working out after my long day.  I worked 8-5 (I vaguely remember lunch at my desk with my phone on my ear) and then had to be downtown for a MOB (Making OKC Beautiful) event from 5:30-7.  I planned ahead and brought my workout clothes with me so I could go to the YMCA just a few blocks from the restaurant.

This was my first time at this location, and I have to say I liked the Downtown Y.  My back was sore when I was rowing, but not the "STOP NOW!" type of hurt, so I continued on as planned.  I was surprised to find that I could not locate any small free weights for lifting, the lightest being 12 pounds.  I was tempted to call it a night at that point as I don't like to use machines for upper body workouts, but instead I decided I was going to get in a full workout by using the stationary bicycles.  I didn't get quite the workout I had in mind, but I got in a solid 50 minutes of exercise in spite of all the reasons not to.

Excuses I did not have to write in my "Lame Excuses" journal tonight:
  • too busy today
  • tired
  • too full of food that is less than workout friendly (the Fire Burger anyone?)
  • the equipment is different than I am used to

Grumble grumble grumble

12:00 rowing machine
2 sets lifting

I had a bad morning- stressed about report cards, frustrated at finances, and angry that I couldn't find the pair of jeans I wanted to wear to work (which also cut into my workout time).

Generally a good upper body work out will burn off any aggression and leave me feeling stronger, but today it only seemed to amplify all that negativity.  I was even more frustrated because I was going to work mad, which is not fair to those around me.  But here's the thing, I like my job and I love my coworkers, and within 30 minutes they had completely lifted my spirits.

Not there yet, but I like where I'm heading!

181.4
15:00 rowing machine
19 minutes lifting/upper body, 2 sets
13:00 steam room

I was sore today from the trail run, but not nearly as sore as I had feared.  Like a junkie I wanted more endorphins so I headed to the gym this evening for my next fix.  I had a great workout tonight in spite of my soreness.  I was able to find my rhythm on the rowing machine and probably could have rowed longer, but I wanted to make sure I get in some good weight lifting too.

The weights were crowded this evening so I had to mix up my order based on what was available when.  I upped some of the weight and reps and did well.  I felt strong and pushed my arms just far enough.

Its been a while since I have been able to stay in the steam room very long, but tonight went better.  Its so warm and almost comforting at times.  I listened to opera and just tried to relax and do some light stretching.  I think some of the tightness that has been plaguing me lately loosened up a bit which would be excellent.

I am proud of tonight's workout and I genuinely enjoyed it.  It hurt just the right amount and I didn't take any soft excuses from myself.  If I can churn out more runs like yesterday and workouts like this evening (and turn away from the desserts!) then I can reach my goals and be who I want to be.  Such a nice change to feel like I am moving closer instead of getting farther from achievement.

Stinks like success

178.4!!!
15:00 rowing machine
15:00, 1.08 miles on treadmill
20:00 lifting
35 sit ups

I stink right now, and I couldn't be happier.  I smell like stinky achievement!

My morning started out with me blearily staring at my scale trying to figure out why the last number had jumped from a 1 to an 8... then I realized in my sleepy haze that 178.4 is less than 181 and that this was a good thing! My day was off to a great start.  After Seth dropped the kids off at school we headed to the gym and got to it.

My rowing was stronger today, but I never quite found my rhythm.  Next I chose a treadmill next to Seth so I could work out the tightness that creeps into my posture when I use the rowing machine. The weight lifting went great and today I really like what I am starting to see.  My arms are really looking stronger, I am feeling confident again, and by golly I can work up a good stink!  After I lifted we needed to leave so Seth could pick our kindergartner up in time so he just dropped me off at the house on the way.  It felt good to do sit ups while my muscles were still twitchy and I smelt like hard work.  Its gonna be a great day.

Et tu Glute?

174.4
15:00, rowing
22:09, lifting/upper body

My glutes have betrayed me.  I treated them pretty darn well over the last several days.  Friday I gently swam, Saturday I gave my body the day off and chilled.  Sunday, all I asked was a very slow run (more of a jog really) of only 3 miles.  And then I made sure to replenish my protein with chocolate milk, and later took a nice ice bath while drinking more chocolate milk.  Really, what more can a girl's rear end ask for?!  But how did my body repay me?  By a royal pain in my butt!  I woke up this morning with the feeling that my glutes had been shredded.  Well that kind of throws a wrench in things, not sure how this will effect my week. Had been planning a pleasant trail run in the morning, and I am saddened that I will have to miss out on something that is such a joy for me.

I didn't want to surrender a whole day, so I thought rowing and lifting should be fine.  After all, what does my butt have to do with my arms?!  Actually, they seem to all be connected.  You never think much about it, but apparently butt muscles are part of your stabilizing force when you are lifting barbells over your head.  And they are also tied to your lower back- huh!  All this to say, tonight was not my best workout.

Earned sweat is sweeter

174.7
15:00 rowing machine
24:28, 2 sets lifting/upper body
26:06, 2 miles

The whole family went to the gym after a delicious dinner of ribs.  Ironically, the main reason Seth wanted to go to the gym was because he was tired of sweating in our warm house all day! (Our  A/C is 46 years old, and since we went to the time of use plan he is watching it like a hawk!)  Seth tried the rowing machine for about 5 minutes tonight, which made me happy because its becoming one of my favorite exercises.

I am proud of myself tonight because I completed the entire workout that I intended to do, even though it was challenging.  While I was lifting I had a moment of self-doubt when I compared myself to the girl next to me who was lifting heavier weights (she was 10 years younger, and looked like a lifelong athlete so not a fair comparison).  But I was able to shake that monkey off my shoulders and remember that this was about me and my best.  My goals and my story are different from the people sharing the weight room, so my success will look different too.  And tonight I did my best and worked out my plan even when it was hard.  That is my measure of success for the day, and really you have to look at it on a day by day basis.

After all that arms and back type torture exercise, I walked over to my husband on the treadmills, shook pinkies, and informed him that I was heading to the indoor track and I was going to do 2 miles-come hell or high water!  A few laps into my run, about 8:10, he shows up with the kids, and then I had the terrible realization that the child care class ended at 8!  Oops, glad he remembered!  I was tempted to stop earlier so they didn't have to wait on me, and so we wouldn't miss bedtime so terribly, but then I decided I had to finish what I started.  I would have regretted that, and they need to see me run.  Some of the time they ran with me, other times they waited by the door and high-fived me as I completed each lap.  My girls are so good for my morale!  Of course, when I finished my last lap, my oldest hands me my water bottle, and I take a single drink- because they had drank the rest of my electrolyte water!

I want to share a special moment that was sharp for me, although it may seem odd.  We rowed when we first got to the gym, but then Seth got up about 5 minutes in, and I was left contentedly rowing, engrossed in my own rhythm, singing silently along with my music.  A little past halfway through my goal of 15 minutes, I felt the perfect bead of sweat run right down my back.  For some reason, it made me smile.  That drop of earned sweat was nice, it was mine.  All day I got all sticky sweaty when I even took 2 steps outside of the A/C, but this was the sweat of hard work, the sweat of determination in action.  And I relished it.

When I was done rowing, lifting and running, I visited the ladies room.  Looking in the mirror, I smiled.  I was covered in a nice glow of over an hour's worth of earned sweat.  And it was a beautiful thing.

Late night rowing

173.7 (this morning)
13:00 rowing (last night)
17:00 leg machines (last night)

I stuck to my plans and good intentions and went to the other YMCA after work yesterday!  Because I got off work at 9 and the gym closes at 10 it was a rather quick workout, but a good one.

I felt really strong last night!  I rowed harder than I normally do, and felt great doing it.  Then when I moved to the leg machines the normal reps seemed too easy so I upped the weights a little bit.

I really enjoy the way I feel after a workout like that.  I feel strong and confident.  I want to puff out my chest and laugh deeply.  Or pick a friendly brawl.  I just feel like I am on top of the world.  Exercise high is not a myth, and it is habit forming!

Crosstraining- 58 minutes

Seth and I went to the gym tonight and I put in a really good workout.
Rowing 15 minutes
Leg machines 18 minutes
Lap swim 15:28
Treading water 10 minutes

I am totally worn out, but proud of what I did.  Time to crash cause tomorrow is always another day.
